Summary, etc. The empirical evidence avaliable in US indicates signalling and free cash flow explanations as two prominent resons for firms accouncing buybacks. Our research in to the motives for Indian buybacks fails to yield such concrete answers. We employabnormal returns, survey results and offer document reasons for identifying various motives for buybacks. We feel a need to understand the real motives for buyback in India by analysis the changes in promoter stock holding in post buy back period.
